Japan Doubles Tourist Tax on Visitors Looking to Climb Mount Fuji

Japan has doubled the tourist tax for visitors looking to climb or hike the country’s iconic Mount Fuji.

This year’s peak season will see those looking to climb the mountain having to pay an entry fee of around €24.70; up from €12.35 last year.

Japan has seen a huge increase in visitors looking to hike Mount Fuji, which has caused an overtourism concern.

The fee is aimed at levelling off hiker numbers but also to pay for the clean-up effort around the mountain.

The peak climbing season is between July and September. There has already been a 4,000 limit on hiker numbers along Mount Fuji’s most popular trail, the Yoshida Trail.

Money raised will also go towards building shelters to protect against volcanic activity and to maintain the mountain’s hiking routes.
