IATA has warned that the transition to a carbon free/net zero aviation industry will result in higher air fares for passengers.
IATA boss Willie Walsh told the Changi Aviation Summit in Singapore, this week, that consumer air travel should grow by around 3.3% per year over the next 20 years.
However, he warned that the cost of achieving net zero emissions would be higher air fares, which “will have a dampening effect on the level of growth that the industry sees going forward.”
Mr Walsh said: “Because whatever way you look at this, there will be a cost associated with transitioning to net zero. And ultimately, that cost will have to be reflected in the ticket prices that we charge our customers, which will have a dampening effect on the level of growth that the industry sees going forward.”
