French Energy Giant TotalEnergies to Ramp up SAF Capacity from 2028

French energy giant TotalEnergies has announced its intention to grow its Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) provision capacity to European airlines to over 500,000 tonnes per year from 2028.

The move will see Total overhaul its refineries in France, Belgium and Germany – at Normandy, Antwerp and Leuna, respectively – and launch a dedicated SAF unit at its La Mède facility in France.

Total is already blending SAF at a number of airports in France and has long-term provision deals in place with Air France-KLM and Spanish low cost airline Volotea.

The boost to its SAF output will see TotalEnergies supply more than 10% of European SAF volumes, comfortably ahead of the 2030 6% EU mandate.
