ANA & Japan Airlines to Begin Taking Local SAF Supply from April

Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways (ANA) – Japan’s two main carriers – will both begin receiving sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from a local supplier in the spring.

SAF is currently the main avenue for airlines to start transitioning to greener fuel in a bid to cut their emissions, but global supply is slowing the process.

As of April, Japanese energy firm Cosmo Energy will begin supplying SAF to ANA and Japan Airlines, with it producing the fuel from a custom-built facility near Osaka.

Cosmo Energy is targeting yearly production of 30,000 kilolitres of SAF, which would fully fuel a large aircraft around the world 350 times between Tokyo and London.

The company is also planning to expand production globally.
