Virgin Atlantic will conduct the first-ever net-zero transatlantic flight in 2023.
It will take off from the UK next year in a Dreamliner jet using only sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and fly from London Heathrow to New York’s JFK.
The net-zero transatlantic flight will use 100% SAF, combined with carbon removal through biochar credits.
SAF can cut carbon emissions by over 70% compared to conventional jet fuel and is made from waste oils and fats, such as used cooking oil.
The use of 100% SAF on the flight, combined with carbon removal through biochar credits (a substance which traps and stores carbon taken from the atmosphere) will make the flight net zero.
