Tourists return to Thailand’s famous beach

Thailand has reopened one of its most famous beaches to tourists after being closed for three years.

Maya Bay started welcoming visitors again on January 1.

Authorities had closed it to the public in June 2018, saying near-constant tourism had damaged its coral reefs and beach areas.

Prior to closing, the beach was receiving around 5,000 visitors per day.

The beach is surrounded by 300ft-high cliffs and lies on the island of Koh Phi Phi Leh in the Andaman Sea.

It is only accessible by boat from nearby spots such as Krabi, or the islands of Phuket and Phi Phi.

To protect the cove, authorities are only allowing up to 375 visitors on the beach at one time.
