Carnival Announces Emissions Reduction Progress

Carnival Corporation reports that it’s progressing towards its environmental goals, with an anticipated 18% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity based on lower berth capacity by 2024, compared to 2019 figures. Although slightly below its original 20% reduction target set for 2030, the company is optimistic about its trajectory.

By the end of this year, Carnival anticipates achieving a significant milestone, with a projected 42% reduction in GHG emission intensity on a lower berth capacity basis since its inaugural benchmark in 2008. This advancement is expected to surpass the carbon intensity reduction timeline outlined by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for 2030.

In line with its commitment to environmental improvement, Carnival accelerated its GHG intensity reduction goal last year, aiming for at least a 20% cut by 2026 compared to 2019 levels. Remarkably, despite increasing its capacity by approximately 30% since 2011, the company now emits over 10% less total GHG emissions than during its peak historical year.

Acknowledging that reducing fuel consumption is pivotal in curbing GHG emissions, Carnival has implemented various fuel- and energy-saving initiatives. These include adopting more efficient HVAC systems, as well as integrating LED and smart lighting technologies across its operations. The company remains committed to exploring innovative strategies to mitigate emissions from existing fuel usage while pioneering lower-emission alternatives in the industry.
