Sometimes known as the ‘floating garden’, Madeira’s Flower Festival will take place this year from 5th to 29th May.
Madeira is home to an incredible variety of botanic species, which with the archipelago being one of the most fertile places on the planet (potent combination of volcanic soil, subtropical climate and high organic matter). During the Flower Festival, this cultural event celebrates Madeira’s through local traditions, including performances by folk groups, beautiful floral carpets, concerts and variety shows. Madeira’s flora can be appreciated from all over the island, many of which are in extinction in other regions of the globe.
Visitors to the island can experience the following Flower Festival highlights:
“Wall of Hope” – Praça do Município – 7th May (10 am)
On the first Saturday of the festival, children are invited to place a flower on the “Wall of Hope”, in a symbolic appeal for Peace. Accompanied by family members, thousands of children take part in the building of a mural of flowers in Praça do Município, fulfilling the tradition which dates back to 1979.
Allegoric Parade – 8th May (4.30 pm)
Downtown Funchal is filled with music and colour from the parade of floats that combine a variety of floral species with decorations full of creativity. The Allegoric Flower Parade has been taking place since 1979. The parade, which is guided by floats and costumes of approximately 1500 participants, perform choreographies and parade to the sound of musical themes all while spreading a floral aroma along the way.
Flower Exhibition – Praça do Povo – 5th – 22nd May
At the Flower Pavilion in Praca do Povo, local producers exhibit their varied types of flowers they have grown. Their flowers are displayed and rated in their categories by a specialised jury. Floriculture plays an extremely important role in Madeira’s economy, and is a huge part of their regional production.
