Recently I was lucky enough to be invited out to Antalya by the Turkish Tourism Board UK & Ireland to explore the relatively unknown golf mecca, that is Antalya.
The Montgomerie Maxx Royal is located in Belek, just East of Antalya on the Turkish Mediterranean coast and has been host to many exclusive tournaments and European Tour events. The area was chosen for its consistent fabulous climate and scenic natural beauty.
On first impression, the Montgomerie Max Royal is extremely impressive. Montgomerie Maxx Royal Clubhouse is one of the more classic Golf Clubs in Belek with many facilities, like a fabulous driving range, putting greens and a golf academy. Also, the service at the clubhouse and quality of food is next to none.
From the genius mind of Colin Montgomerie comes 104 hectares of picturesque, mixed pine forest and sandy ridges, the feel of the natural environment has been well maintained, thereby enhancing these particular characteristics of the golf course.
Opening its doors in 2008, the course quickly established itself as part of the elite in Turkey. The course although having very open fairways, bridges beauty with difficulty. The holes swerve through the high pine trees, which are accompanied by numerous water hazards. You will be forgiven for losing a ball or two. A notable hole regarding water is the 4th where you have a very challenging par 5 over water, be warned!
The first time I played, the greens ran a bit slow due to some bad weather the night before, but on my second attempt at the course, they ran a lot faster. The greens aren’t too challenging which is a relief but are no walk in the park, a nice balance.
A lovely added bonus to the course is the inclusion of a floodlit back 9. The course provides a night golf option if you feel up for it after hours.
Overall the course is an absolute pleasure to play. If you are visiting Antalya, the Montgomerie Maxx Royal is undoubtedly top of the list. The fabulous course, fabulous staff, fabulous facilities all provide a fabulous experience.
A quick thank you to the Turkish Tourism Board UK & Ireland, Turkish Airlines and Maxx Royal for making it possible for me to play such an elite course.
