Backlash Over Offensive Travel TikTok Post

A travel TikToker went viral this week for posting a video about not wanting to sit beside ‘big people’ or children on flights. The post created a discussion about the stress and prejudice that plus-size people come across when travelling.

The offending TikToker posted a video captioned: ”POV: When you board a plane early and then have the anxious 10-minute wait praying no big people or children sit next to you”.

The video has been viewed over 912,000 times, with some people in the comments section saying views like those held by the TikToker are the reason they don’t like to travel.

Popular presenter and podcaster, Louise Mc Sharry who has spoken openly in the past about the struggles plus-size women experience in the fashion industry, commented on the TikTik post on her Instagram saying views like that ‘‘directly contribute to other people’s unhappiness.”

”There are people in those comments saying that they’ll never travel because of views like this- because they are worried about things like this, she said.

I just want to say to fat people like me, your life is just as important as her life, you deserve to travel just as much as she does, don’t let people like her stop you from going out, from going on your summer holidays and living your life.

”It is not your fault that the airline industry doesn’t cater for people who are even slightly above average size. That’s the airline industry’s fault”
