The only airport that is actually ‘in’ London recently celebrated 25 years in operation, with the one millionth movement using the airport on 11th July with a CityJet flight from Dublin.
London City Airport had 3 million passengers in 2011 and is proud of its 20/10 proposition: 20-minute check in, from door to gate , and 10-minute arrival, from tarmac to train – the shortest times at any UK airport.
However, this progressive airport is not content to stand still and has ambitious plans for the future and is preparing to meet the challenges of the next 20 years. Permission has been granted to increase its operations from 70,000 movements per annum to 120,000 in the future. Currently the traffic split is 65% business passengers and 35% leisure.
According to Matthew Hall, Chief Commercial Officer for London City Airport, they are embarking on an expansion plan that will see improved infrastructural facilities, such as a new arrivals building that will open in 2016. He said: “We are on the side of the passenger and there are plans for bigger and better departure facilities, with more gates being added.”
They are also working closely with aircraft manufacturers, with new generation aircraft that will have 20% less emissions, longer range and higher capacity.
So it’s full steam ahead for London City Airport.
