Portland Positions Itself as Global Capital of Women’s Sports Tourism

Portland is officially pivoting its tourism strategy to capture one of the fastest-growing sectors in the travel industry: Women’s Sports Tourism.

This evolution is a natural next step for a city already synonymous with sports and endurance. As the home to the global and North American headquarters of Nike and Adidas, and host of the legendary summer-long ‘Pedalpalooza cycling festival, Portland’s DNA is built on athletic innovation.

Today, that legacy is being channelled into a new, female-led empire, as a wave of former Nike and Adidas executives transition into leadership roles for the city’s professional teams – essentially “recycling” the world’s best sports business minds to fuel a local incubator model.

This year, the city’s basketball culture is set to score with the 2026 debut of the Portland Fire in the WNBA. The Fire joins a robust ecosystem anchored by the iconic Providence Park, which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. As the historic home to the Portland Thorns FC and Portland Timbers FC, the stadium now hosts over 150 events annually, ranging from professional soccer to major concerts. This concentration of elite talent is supported by the Portland Sports Innovation Hub, where sports tech entrepreneurs and travel startups pilot the next generation of fan-engagement apps and stadium technologies.

While many destinations treat women’s sports as a secondary attraction, Portland is the first to build a city-wide hospitality ecosystem designed specifically for the modern fan. This is best exemplified by the global rise of The Sports Bra, a first-of-its-kind bar founded by local chef Jenny Nguyen to showcase women’s athletics with full sound and visibility. Beyond the bar, local hotels are leaning into this movement with “fan-first” packages; properties like the Hyatt Regency Portland offer curated guides to female-owned businesses and VIP tours of the city’s world-class facilities, ensuring that every visitor experiences the full breadth of Portland’s sporting revolution.

Top five must-visit sports sites:

  2. The Sports Bra: Visit the world’s first bar dedicated exclusively to broadcasting women’s sports, a global pilgrimage site that features women-owned breweries and unmatched game-day energy.
  3. The Moda Centre (Home of the Fire): Experience the electric debut of Portland’s WNBA franchise, where record-breaking crowds are redefining professional basketball culture in the Pacific Northwest.
  4. Kaiser Permanente Performance Centre: This $150 million, first-of-its-kind facility serves as a high-tech incubator designed specifically for the elite training and medical needs of female athletes.
  5. Gameday on 23rd Avenue: Join the pre-game ritual in the Nob Hill district, where the entire neighbourhood transforms into a vibrant, jersey-clad parade of fans and women-sports-themed window displays.
