Despite France ranking as one of the top travel destinations for holidaymakers from Ireland, just 3% feel very confident speaking French, according to new research by Irish Ferries.
While French remains the most widely taught foreign language at secondary school level, the overwhelming majority of people in Ireland (74%) are still not confident enough to parlez français.
That said, just 16% of the 400 people surveyed said language concerns would put them off holidaying in France, and a sizeable 61% make an effort to speak some basic words while travelling there, proving the French Leaving Cert oral exam didn’t go entirely to waste.
The survey also found that some Irish holidaymakers have fumbled French customs, with 8% admitting to misfiring on cheek-kissing etiquette in the past.

Other key findings from Irish Ferries’ survey show:
Basic French knowledge is high:
- Most holidaymakers surveyed have a (very) basic grasp of the French language:
- 94% know ‘bonjour’ and 91% recognise ‘merci’.
- Almost 3 in 4 say they’re motivated to learn and use more French on holiday, and almost half (44%) turn to technology and use translation apps to assist.
Travellers see practical reason to parlez français – asking for directions a priority:
- Asked in which situations travellers are most likely to need some French;
- 55% cited when asking for directions
- 45% cited ordering food and drink
- One in five admitted to having an awkward language moment while visiting France in the past.
French cuisine & culture a major draw:
- Over half (58%) of respondents said French food and wine is a top reason for visiting. Favourites included:
- Croissants & pastries (63%)
- Baguettes (51%)
- Cheese (45%)
- Culture and history were also found to be a major pull factor (55%), followed by the promise of better weather (47%) and its proximity to Ireland (31%).
Speaking about the survey, Nora Costello, Consumer Sales & Marketing Director at Irish Ferries, said: “Clearly while many Irish travellers feel a little nervous about their French, they’re still keen to visit and make the effort to speak the language, even if it’s with a touch of Franglais. That willingness to connect, whether it’s with a confident ‘bonjour’ or a sheepish ‘excusez-moi,’ is part of the joy of travel.”
Travel with Irish Ferries:
