The EU has announced its first state aid scheme for the promotion of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which is seen as being the easiest and quickest way of transitioning airlines to greener fuels and fast-tracking the aviation industry towards its net zero emissions targets.
The move is a €36m state aid agreement to promote the use of SAF on domestic flights in Denmark; with the European Commission green-lighting the programme this week.
The programme -which is due to run until the end of 2027 – will support at least one domestic flight route in Denmark, using 40% SAF and will support at least 20 commercial SAF-fuelled one-way flights per week.
