Loveholidays Travel Trend Survey: Portugal, Spain Still Top with Irish Holidaymakers; but Malta, Bulgaria & Tunisia Catching Up

A new travel trends survey shows hearty annuals like Portugal and Spain remain top of the agenda for Irish holidaymakers; but the likes of Malta, Bulgaria and Tunisia are also on the radar.

Online travel agent loveholidays has unveiled the major Irish holidaymaker trends in its new Recharge report.

Classic fly-and-flop favourites are here to stay with Albufeira, in Portugal’s Algarve region, the most popular short haul getaway for Irish holidaymakers this summer. The destination’s popularity is, no doubt, thanks to its golden sand beaches, short and frequent flights to Faro from all of Ireland’s major airports, and experiences that cater to all.

Despite this, new destinations are taking off, with the research revealing Malta as a rising star this summer. Bookings to the country have surged by 193% versus last year, following the addition of new Aer Lingus routes connecting the destination directly with Dublin and Shannon, making it more accessible than ever for Irish holidaymakers.

Cost-conscious getaways are of high priority to Irish holidaymakers this summer, and Recharge reveals that the most affordable destination for a last minute all inclusive summer getaway is Morocco, with average prices for a weeklong holiday coming in at less than €390 per person.

Bulgaria, Greece and Tunisia also make the list of this summer’s most affordable hotspots, and are becoming increasingly attractive to those looking for rich cultural experiences without a premium price tag.

Stateside travel is a top priority for Irish tourists travelling further afield this summer, with Orlando, Las Vegas, New York and Nashville all featuring in the five most popular long haul destinations.

Bookings to Orlando have increased by 68% compared to last year, with many Irish holidaymakers seeking adventure following the opening of Universal Epic Universe. With five new lands to explore, the theme park is undoubtedly drawing crowds of all ages to the destination.

Clem Walshe, Commercial Director for Ireland at loveholidays, said: “Recharge reflects our ongoing commitment to understanding our customers better, ensuring that we can offer them the best value, choice and ease when it comes to their next getaway. Whether it’s finding a great deal, discovering a hidden gem or just getting there with peace of mind, we’re proud to be supporting Irish holidaymakers every step of the way.”
