Shannon Airport has said construction of its planned new solar PV farm is progressing.
The project will mark the first solar PV farm ever built on an airfield in Ireland and will provide up to 20% of Shannon Airport’s electricity needs.
The move is being hailed as a pioneering step in green aviation in this country.
Shannon Airport is looking to lower its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and to become fully net zero by 2050. Its sustainable efforts are becoming more vital as the airport continues to successfully grow operations.
Earlier this week, Shannon Airport posted strong operational figures for the first half of this year, showing a 7% year-on-year jump in passenger numbers to 1.04 million people.

On the back of those figures, Shannon Airport Group CEO, Mary Considine said: “We’re proud to see such strong growth in the first half of 2025. These results are a testament to the hard work of our team and our ongoing investment in infrastructure, sustainability, route development and our focus on customer excellence. Shannon Airport continues to deliver for the region and for Ireland.”
