Costa Cruises Undertakes First LNG Refuelling at Port of Dubai

Costa Cruises has undertaken the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) refuelling for a cruise ship in the port of Dubai.

The Costa Smeralda – Costa’s flagship vessel – undertook the refuelling last weekend during its winter cruise in the UAE.

The “Green Zeebrugge” tanker ship filled Costa Smeralda’s three tanks with a total of around 3,000 cubic meters of LNG.

Compared to other common fossil fuels like coal, gasoline, and oil, LNG is a clean energy source with much less emissions. The total hydrocarbon combustion of LNG results in an average 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

“Costa, as part of Carnival Corporation, is committed to leading the way in sustainable cruising. After being the first to introduce LNG in cruises, together with our sister brand AIDA Cruises, we are now also the first cruise line to use this technology in Dubai – stated Giuseppe Carino, Sea-Land Experience Operations Senior Vice President.

“On this direction, we are also developing the shore power technology on our fleet, and working on biofuels, new technologies and alternative fuels”.
