Ireland Set for New Tourism Minister, as Catherine Martin Becomes Only 2nd Ever to Lose Seat

Ireland is set for a new Tourism Minister and new Transport Minister in the next Dáil, following the Green Party’s disastrous General Election result, which has so far seen only party leader Roderic O’Gorman survive with a seat.

Former party leader and Transport Minister in the last Government, Eamon Ryan had already announced his decision to step down from frontline politics. But, as well as a disastrous vote for all of its other candidates, the Green’s also suffered a massive blow with Catherine Martin – the outgoing Tourism Minister – losing her seat after the weekend vote.

Ms Martin is only the second Tourism Minister in the history of the State to lose their seat at a General Election; the first being Fianna Fáil’s Mary Hanafin in 2016.

The Greens came under huge criticism, this year, for their tourism agenda; particularly the chaos surrounding the passenger cap at Dublin Airport.

The next Tourism Minister looks likely to be selected from Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael or a third coalition partner, possibly Labour.
