IPW 2024: ‘Big Apple’ Makeover – All That’s New in New York!

A wave of new developments is set to transform New York’s tourism landscape, including new hotels, attractions and major investment at two of its airports.

Developments

Currently under construction, the expansion of the Clinton Cove Park area of Hudson River Park’s Pier 97 in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen is now in design and will feature a playground with water spray features, sunset plaza seating, an activity field and an all-ages slide.

TSX Broadway in Times Square, a new development including a hotel — Tempo by Hilton Times Square — The Palace Theatre, dining, retail and entertainment stages is underway and opening in phases, with the recent unveiling of its 18,000-square-foot podium LED Screen where visitors and locals alike can upload 15-second videos casting over Times Square.

Bronx Point is a 530,000-square-foot mixed-use development in the South Bronx, opening in phases with housing, retail, public space, a waterfront promenade and cultural programming including the Hip Hop Museum in 2025.  

As part of a private-public partnership, New York City Football Club  will fully finance and build New York’s first professional soccer stadium. The Willets Point project in Queens will have 25,000 seats, a new public school, 40,000 square feet of public open space and will bring 2,500 affordable homes to the community. The project will add an estimated 16,000 jobs and predicted $6 billion to the City’s economy. 

Transportation

Ongoing work at John F Kennedy Airport will see the addition of $125 million commercial redevelopment initiative, including 300+ new concessions and 60+ new retail offerings, emphasising local, minority and women-owned businesses. JFK also saw the groundbreaking of the new, upcoming $4.2 million redevelopment of Terminal 6, which will occupy the site of the former Terminal 6 and Terminal 7. Construction is also currently underway at Terminal 1, which will become a state-of-the-art terminal with 23 gates and 300,000 square feet of dining, retail, lounges and recreation, expected to open in 2026, in time for the World Cup.

At Newark International Airport, the new Terminal A has 33 gates serving Air Canada, American Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines customers and directly connected to a multilevel parking facility. The new terminal was recently given a prestigious five-star rating by Skytrax, the preeminent aviation industry ratings firm, joining LaGuardia Airport’s Terminal B as the only two airport terminals in North America awarded the highest rating by Skytrax.

New Hotels

Manhattan

In February 2024, Firmdale Hotels’ third NYC property, the The Warren Street Hotel, in Tribeca opened with 69 individually designed rooms, suites and residences—some with private terrace gardens and Lower Manhattan and Hudson River views—as well as the Warren Street Bar & Restaurant, offering an all-day menu.

April 2024 saw the opening of the Springhill Suites New York Manhattan Times Square, a new modern hotel in the heart of Times Square, where guests can enjoy rooms designed for both work and relaxation, complimentary hot breakfast buffets, a state-of-the-art gym, and a cocktail at Bar 46.

Corinthia, the renowned luxury hotel brand, will open The Surrey, its first NYC location on the Upper East Side where the historic Surrey Hotel once stood. The hotel, set to open in summer 2024, aims to restore the property’s former glamour and sophistication. 

Following a complete renovation and restoration, the famed Waldorf Astoria hotel is projected to reopen later this year featuring its restored historic public and event spaces along with luxury condominiums and 375 large guest rooms and suites, helmed by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and renowned interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. The hotel will also bring back a restored Peacock Alley and the famous ballroom.

Brooklyn

Less than a mile away from Barclays Center, the new Tru by Hilton hotel offers a 24-hour market, free hot breakfast, and walking distance to over dozens of restaurants with easy access to public transportation.

Queens

Even Hotel Long Island City will offer comfortable rooms with welcoming decor and in-room fitness zones for private workouts, allowing guests to stay active during their visit. Conveniently located near attractions like MoMA PS1, the hotel is also within a 15-minute drive to LaGuardia Airport. It’s due to open toward the end of the year.
