DFA Travel Advisory on Hurricane Irene

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is advising against all non essential travel to southern parts of the Bahamas, as Hurricane Irene is due to pass near the islands. This will result in heavy rains and winds with gusts well over 100 miles per hour.

There are also travel warnings out for the south-eastern and north-western areas of the Bahamas. Irish citizens in the affected areas are strongly advised against any sea travel during this time and should check www.bahamashurricaneprep.com for further information. The US National Hurricane Center in Miami has issued advisories for Hurricane Irene. As changes to the forecast and local conditions are continuous, Irish citizens should visit the US National Hurricane Center for the latest updates (www.nhc.noaa.gov/#IRENE).

Citizens who live permanently or seasonally in the affected areas should monitor local news and weather reports and follow the advice of local authorities. Visitors should contact their travel agent or tour operator to determine whether the situation will disrupt travel arrangements. Citizens in need of consular assistance should contact the Irish embassy in Ottawa, which is accredited to the Bahamas (www.embassyofireland.ca).
