Iceland Volcano: Flights Unaffected; Blue Lagoon Closed, but Accessibility to be Monitored Hourly

Obeo Travel has issued a statement updating the travel situation concerning Iceland in light of last night’s volcanic eruption in the country.

The volcano, close to the town of Grindavik in the south-west of Iceland, roughly 30 miles from Iceland’s capital Reykjavik erupted last night.

As the volcano – which has been showing signs of eruption for a number of weeks – has not erupted ash, there is no disruption to flights in and out of Iceland, due to there being no ash cloud.

Also, the only area currently restricted is a very small part of the Reykjanes Peninsula. However, that includes the popular Blue Lagoon resort.

The Blue Lagoon has been closed, but Obeo Travel – a specialist in Iceland holidays – said it is monitoring the situation.

Obeo Travel said, in a statement: “The health and safety of our guests is of utmost importance to us, so rest assured that Obeo Travel monitors the situation every hour of the day. We have already moved all our customers to alternative lagoons up until and inclusive of 28th December. We are going to remain vigilant and monitor the situation before we make decisions for the Blue Lagoon from 29th December onwards. We shall be in touch directly with all affected bookings.”

“Reykjavik and the rest of Iceland remain completely unaffected and all operations are running as normal. Therefore there is no need to panic,” the company said.
